    General Motors Corp. said Thursday it will spend roughly $450 million to expand and refurbish two plants in Flint Michigan. GM said it will invest about $300 million to expand the Flint Engine South plant for production of the company's global V-6 engine that will power a variety of GM cars and sport utility vehicles.   • Dec 16, 2004 - The Wayne truck plant in Michigan has agreed to new work rules to secure an expansion and a 300 million USD investment. Read the article in "Trades News Articles"

  • Dec 15, 2004 - Chrysler in the U.S. is offering early retirement packages to factory electricians, pipe fitters and other highly paid skilled trades workers as part of an agreement with the United Auto Workers union to cut 5,000 of the high-paying jobs by 2007. In "Trades News Articles"

  • Dec 13, 2004 - DaimlerChrysler AG (DCX) and General Motors Corporation (GM) today announced a cooperative effort that will advance the state of hybrid technology to benefit their customers, the environment and with a little luck, their market share. In "Trades News Articles"

  • Dec 11, 2004 - GM workers in Germany are losing up to 10,000 jobs and are those with 30 years of service are being offered a severance of $287,000 U.S. dollars, full pension benefits and a year of retraining. You can read the article in "Trades News Articles"

    I don't have to tell anyone that it is incredibly good news that Canada's dollar had its biggest weekly decline in almost 20 years after the Bank of Canada abandoned a pledge to boost its target interest rate "over time".   • Dec 8, 2004 - While General Motors says it isn’t so, Doug Orr has gone to the media to say that the union suspects the company could be planning to close or scale down its Ontario Street components plant.   • Dec 5, 2004 - Following a further year on year decline in sales, General Motors and Ford are to cut production for the first quarter of 2005. With the US market increasingly favouring foreign brands, particularly those hailing from Japan, the two US companies can no longer afford to continue risking losses of the magnitude seen in recent times.   • Dec 1, 2004 - The Michigan Economic Development Corp. and Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced jobs initiatives Tuesday designed to encourage General Motors Corp. to invest more than $400 million to expand engine and truck assembly operations in Flint.   • Nov 16, 2004 - We need ALL STA members to fax their MP from the link in the "Trades News Articles" as Canada needs an effective auto policy. Every job in a major auto manufacturing facility translates into a total employment in Canada of 7.5 jobs (counting the supplier and spin-off jobs that are stimulated by every auto investment). The auto industry accounts for one-quarter of our exports, one-third of our merchandise trade surplus and is one of the rare industries in which Canada is more productive than the U.S. Please send the fax now from the link at the bottom of the linked page.

  • Nov 6, 2004 - You might remember that when our union reps met with Homi Patel the other day, Homi said that some future HFV6 production will go into the U.S. That production is going into a new engine plant that is going to be built in Flint Michigan according to an article that I had a link to in the "Trades News Articles" area.. Unfortunately the link is now dead.
     

  • Nov 5, 2004 - We have all heard of the "Canadian Automotive Partnership Council" and that Mike Grimaldi is the chair of that council. Buzz Hargrove sits on the council as well. Back on October 26th, they released a 24 page report entitled, "A Call for Action: A Canadian Auto Strategy."   • Oct 29, 2004 - Although we have known about it for a while, the politicians were falling all over themselves today to announce the $1 billion dollar refit of the Ford Oakville plant.   • Oct 18, 2004 - General Motors is increasingly determined to change the way it does business.     Hundreds of workers at a GM Opel car plant in Germany kept up a protest outside the factory gates Sunday against plans by parent company General Motors for thousands of job cuts, demanding assurances that there will be no compulsory layoffs. In "Trades News Articles"
     

  • Oct 17, 2004 - Two tier wages threaten unity at UAW plants in the U.S. such as American Axle and Delphi. How would YOU feel if the worker beside you was making more than twice you were for the same work? It is a long article and a good read that you will find in the "Trades News Articles". I just hope we never fall into the same trap.

    GM Daewoo in Korea plans to leap further to stand as a global automaker with introductions of new vehicles and diesel cars in 2006. And in March it unveiled a set of investment plans worth 1.74 trillion won for expansion and restructuring of its production facilities in Korea, as well as diesel engine development.     At the same time that GM in Korea is pumping money into plants and technology, their domestic sales are dismal. They are expected to have their second worse year since 1990.   • Sept 7, 2004 - It was mentioned to me at the Labour Day parade that when you "Make the STA your home page" the web site in the title bar of Internet Explorer always remains as SkilledTradesAssociation.com. I have changed it so if you make us your home page, and we encourage all our members to do so, the address that you will see is the root URL. The URLs will now change as they should. I know why this happens, just don't have the $150 a year to fix it.

  • Aug 29, 2004 - Buzz Hargrove chastises the federal government for not being more aggressive in chasing additional vehicle manufacturing investments. The promises made before the election were great but they haven't followed through. In "Trades News Articles"

    I posted a story about the importance of buying Canadian in the "Your Soap Box" area that I saw years ago in the 199 News. I came across it again on the CAW local 200 "Buy Domestic" web site. It's even truer today than it was when it was written.

  • Aug 12, 2004 - Been slow for news the last few days so I would like to address what I see as a bias against GM by the automotive press. The article that prompted me to write this is titled, "General Motors recalls 123,678 cars". The article goes on to say that Chrysler is recalling 438,391 PT Cruisers and Honda is recalling 130,617 Honda CR-Vs for faulty airbags. Why not entitle the article, "Honda recalls 130,617 cars with faulty airbags". Yeah, like that would happen. GM has less recalls than the other manufacturers. In "Trades News Articles"

    I have modified the "Who Are We?" area to the left to reflect the trades and production that are still on layoff at our facility. There are 4 Pipefitters, 4 Tinsmiths, 21 Millwrights, 13 Welders, 5 Dyno Mechanics and 323 Production still on permanent lay off.

    There is also an article on Kerry's speech to the Democratic Convention in the US regarding pledges of billions for the US auto industry. I can't see this article in "Trades News Articles" as being good for us as Canadian General Motors workers.

    Work Smart - Work Safe code of conduct in the "How Can I Help" area has been re-written to make it easier to follow. We would like to thank Doug and Gary for all their help and patience over these last few days.

    Many of you know Les Bartley. Les has been a committeeman and a member of the bargaining committee for many years and is now battling cancer. Read about a fundraiser for the Niagara Regional Cancer Center in Les' name in the "Trades News Articles". We wish him well.

  • June 28, 2004 - A commentary in the Detroit New claims that the big 3 has failed to learn Toyota's lean lessons. You really need to read this thought provoking article in "Trades News Articles"
     

  • June 25, 2004 - Globe and Mail article states we need subsidies from governments to remain competitive in "Trades News Articles"
     

  • June 24, 2004 - Added a "Trades News Article" regarding the HFV6 being built in Japan. Thanks to Dan Murray for the link.
     

  • June 21, 2004 - Added a few more "2005 Negotiations Suggestions" to the list. Thanks to Gary Martin and Papa Dez for those. There are a few others being discussed and they should be posted shortly.
     

  • June 20, 2004 - Added a link in the "CAW And Labour Links" area of the site to XPDNC. This is the most extensive labour link site on the web today. A must see!
