Dear Mr. Grimaldi

My name is Joe Luca and I have 20 years of service at General Motors.  I have worked production and I have worked skilled trades. It took me approximately 13 years with much persistence and determination to complete my apprenticeship, and now I find myself as well as my team mates laid off.  This makes me very unhappy because I hear and read many articles, for example “The Motion” magazine which I received recently stating as usual how well General Motors as a company is doing.

I believe our Union Representatives such as Gary Martin and Doug Orr are doing what they can trying to work together with the company in regards to supplemental help, rather than laying off GM workers and bringing in contractors.  I’m sure your well aware the quality of work that we as tradesman are proud to do!  We’ve proven that in the past. What happened to the Team Concept  that GM is always talking about, working together union and company.

As you are well aware the age majority of our GM workers at the St. Catharines plant are 45-55 years of age.  With no new apprentices in the forecast, who will continue the quality of work and knowledge of the St. Catharines plants that has helped GM reach their goal, which is number 1!

I ask you Mr. Grimaldi to please look into the laid off workers, we have families in GM and outside of GM who would like to continue to be a part of GM.

During my apprenticeship I have been laid off many, many times but I never gave up and finally completed my apprenticeship approximately 2 years ago, only to find myself presently laid off.  I am one of many laid off skilled trades who is very determined to return to work.  I believe you will find that these lay offs were not justified due to the fact that shortly after my lay off began contractors were called in to do Millwright work and to this day I understand that they are forcing tradesman in and asking them to work 12 hour shifts as well as doubling back in.

Please consider this matter very important to the many laid off skilled trades and their families!

Thank you

Joe Luca
