Tony Tirabassi MP

Hi Tony

I write this to you because you have shown me that you have a keen interest in Niagara's youth. Once again I thank you for agreeing to sit in on a group of us dedicated to our youth and the trades. Seamless education/career scenario, lower trades people to apprentice ratio and greater business involvement will be part of those meetings. The following quote is from the 2003 budget and how it effects Niagara. You know where we are coming from, so you will know why we are upset by it.

Manley and Eckert's 2003 budget effects skilled trades. Quote, "Federal program spending such as that contained in Budget 2003 allows for local initiatives such as Canadian Access for International Professionals and Skilled Trades. Delivered jointly by the Employment Help Center and the Welland Heritage Council and Multicultural Center, this short-term, HRDC-funded project makes it possible for local businesses with technical and professional job vacancies to connect with suitably qualified immigrants who reside in the local area. In a region that has a relatively small working age population, yet is home to one of the country’s busiest ports of entry for new Canadians, this is a practical solution to what would otherwise be two very costly local problems—business growth that is hindered by a lack of skilled workers and high unemployment in the immigrant community."

Tony my boy and hundreds of other young residents are begging for apprenticeships throughout Niagara and our government wants to give the jobs away to immigrants like they did to Europeans back in the 60's and 70's? Today my boy put together another 21 resumes. He is laid off again and will hand deliver them tomorrow as he has done so many times in the past. The cry is for more young trades people to replace our aging workforce. That may never happen, because, even when they have trade college and 2 years experience in a machine shop  they may be passed over for someone new arriving into this country. Something is seriously wrong here?

Papa Dez

P.S. Tony called me and explained that this was designed for professionals who needed to authenticate their credentials in their country from their country of origin. Currently there is a doctor and an engineer in his constituency making use of the system.
